AUTHOR SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Midcontinental Journal of Archaeology is the semi-annual refereed journal of the Midwest Archaeological Conference, Inc. MCJA welcomes the submission of original papers on the archaeology of the region bounded by the Boreal Forests, the Gulf of Mexico, the Appalachian Mountains, and the Great Plains of North America. All manuscripts submitted are subject to anonymous peer review by knowledgeable scholars, and if accepted may be subject to revision. Papers submitted to MCJA should not be under consideration by other publishers, nor should they have been previously published. Normally, manuscripts in excess of 35 pages will not be considered for publication.

MCJA uses American Antiquity style guidelines. Non-conforming manuscripts will be returned to the author(s) for revision. All manuscript material must be typed double-spaced on one side of the sheet only, left justified, with one (1) inch margins, in Times New Roman 12 pt. font. Use white bond paper only. An original and three copies must be submitted, accompanied by photocopies of all illustrations. Manuscripts should be consecutively paginated beginning with the title page. Include a brief abstract of less than 150 words that specifically refers to text material. Footnotes are not permitted, but endnotes may be judiciously employed. Text citations are set in parentheses, e.g. (Author 2003:359), or author (2003:359). References to publications cited in the text only are listed alphabetically, by author last name, in ascending chronological order, using first name and middle initials.

The MCJA printed page is 4.5 x 7 inches. Illustrations should be scaled appropriately (approximately 5:8 ratio) such that text and other pertinent material will survive reduction. Figures should be submitted as stand alone graphics, not embedded in the text. Number all figures consecutively and provide a caption for each. Tables should be typed on separate pages, numbered sequentially, and given headings. Proper reference to both figures and tables should be present in the text.

Upon acceptance, all papers must be provided on a CD in either Microsoft Word or Corel WordPerfect. All artwork must be submitted as individual digital file. Use JPG format (for gray scale images or photographs (300 dpi minimum, 5 inches wide maximum). Use TIFF files for line drawings (300 dpi minimum, 1200 dpi strongly preferred, 5 inches wide maximum). For further details on style and manuscript formatting consult a current issue of MCJA, or consult the American Antiquity style guidelines at: www.saa.org/Publications/Styleguide/styframe.html.

Galley proofs will be sent to the senior author. Proofs should be read, corrected, and returned to the Editor within 48 hours of receipt. While minor alterations to text are permitted at this stage, major alterations will be subject to additional author charges. Five copies of the journal issue containing the published article will be provided to the senior author.

Manuscript correspondence should be sent to:
