Archaeology
Over the past decade AltaMira Press has become a leading full-service publisher
of academic and professional archaeology with products ranging from
college
undergraduate textbooks and supplementary textbooks, to academic monographs,
reference books, tools for professional practice, professional journals, and
the occasional book for a mass audience.
We have a special interest in issues of public archaeology, including several volumes
published in conjunction with the Society
for American Archaeology, a journal
and book
series with the World Archaeological Congress, and a practice-based
series in conjunction with the University of Nevada, Reno, Heritage
Resources Management Program.
Other AltaMira series cover a broad array of substantive, regional, and issues-based topics including
archaeological methodology,
social archaeology,
geophysical methods,
gender and archaeology,
archaeology of religion,
and regional series on
Africa,
the American Southwest,
Eastern Woodlands,
and West,
and Southeast Asia.
In addition to these formalized series, our publications cover a wide
array of topics in both Americanist and classical archaeology. We have
published such things as:
- Popular books on the archaeological search for
Amelia Earhart,
the prehistory of California,
and the existence of Bigfoot.
Two of these books have won SAA book awards.
- Reference books on
cultural resource management,
archaeological methods
(example 1,
example 2)
and rock art research
- Unusual textbooks for teaching introductory students, including a
three novels-as-textbook
(example 1,
example 2,
example 3)
and comic books
(example 1,
example 2)
- Cutting edge academic and professional volumes that challenge conventional wisdom on topics such as
archaeology as popular culture,
cultural tourism,
and hunter gather spirituality
- The leading journals of Southwestern archaeology,
Midwestern archaeology, and
global archaeology.
